Falsities in the Movie Twister
In today’s day and time people are fascinated by the violence of nature and as a result many movies have been made depicting this violence. The movie known as Twister depicts Mother Nature in a destructive way both emotionally and physically. Lives are lost and homes destroyed as tornados touch down in the mid west. After viewing the movie, some may believe what was shown to be a portrayal of reality, and what happens when dealing with or around tornados. However, many instances in the movie are found to be false in real life. Through the rest of the paper, the movie Twister will be analyzed, allowing the exaggerations, and the falsities to come to light. The movie depicts many falsities, one in which the way the debris is sucked in to the tornado. In the movie objects or debris is flung out of the tornado some of which includes farm vehicles, an eighteen wheeler oil truck, animals, and even houses. According to the National Weather Service, it is a fact that a tornado does not fling debris or objects out of its funnel. But instead sucks what ever is in its way into its funnel and only discards of it when the actual tornado dissipates. Another discrepancy found in the sucking in and
The movie also exaggerates the patterns of tornados. In the scene with the cows and the numerous tornados side winding east then west, stopping, then west, and so on was an exaggeration of tornados that are considered to jump from location to location or to side wind. In addition to the embellishment of tornado movement in the movie was also the exaggeration of tornados appearing out of a clear sky. In truth a tornado does not just appear out of no-where when there is a clear sky to be seen. There are tell tale signs that let you know there is a strong possibility of “an approaching tornado such as a dark, often greenish sky, large hail, or a loud roar similar to a freight train” (N.O.A.A. 2). In the movie none of these signs were given, the tornado appeared out of a sunny sky, quite an exaggeration of the truth. The portrayal of a tornado warning is also falsified throughout the movie. All the national weather service can do, “when conditions are favorable for sever weather to develop, is to issue a severe thunderstorm or tornado watch” (N.O.A.A. 6). As far as warnings go “weather service personal use information from weather radar, spotters, and other sources to issue sever thunderstorm and tornado warnings” (N.O.A.A. 6). No one is able to predict what category the tornado is when it first appears on a location, as is depicted in the movie. All the personnel involved in predicating tornados can do is issue a watch or a warning; they are not able to tell the strength o
