Will A Job Market Upturn Spark Employee Mobility?Once the economy firms up and employment prospects brighten, many employees will shop around for a new job. In fact, more than four out of five employees surveyed by the Society for Human Resource Management indicated that they would be extremely or somewhat likely to actively seek another job when the hiring market improves. Expectations about when hiring will rebound differed between surveyed employees and human-resources managers. While 42% of responding employees chose "three to six months" as the expected timeframe for improvement in the employment market, only 23% of HR managers said the same. What were the reasons most commonly cited by employees for wanting to change jobs? A desire for better pay and benefits led the way, at 53%. Employment Satisfaction: In the Doldrums Of those responding to the job board's July poll, 84% indicated a preference for telecommuting. However, this is a decline from last year, when 92% of respondents cited the ability to work from home as an important consideration when looking for a new position. "We feel our employees are part of the solution, not the problem. That's why we feel the best way to dissipate the fear and stress that arises in such situations is with open communications, complete sharing of information and the truth," he says. When choosing among reasons for wanting to telecommute, 43% of respondents cited more flexible work hours, 24% cited more time with their families and 19% cited reduced commuting time and costs.
