In the short story "Two Kinds" the main character, Jing-Mei is introduced to playing the piano. While her mother becomes hopeful of her playing the piano, Jing-Mei becomes rebellious to her mothers hopes. She later on in the story was regretful for how she had acted and what she had said to her mother. She also didn't make or fulfill any goals she didn't believe in her self and she ended up dropping out of college. Jing-Mei, a main character in the short story, is selfish, regretful, and an under performer. She exhibits these qualities throughout the book. .
Jing-Mei shows a selfish side to her by the way she thinks and talks to her mother. She try's to think of ways to destroy any pride she had. A quote in the book says: "If we ask Jing-Mei wash dish she hear nothing but music. It's like you can't stop this natural talent." And right then I was determined to stop her foolish pride. ( ) She was very angry at her mother for trying to help her. She would say things to her self like, "I won't let her change me, I promised myself." ( )She hadn't cared about what her mother thought just about what she didn't want to do. That's how she seemed to be a selfish little girl.
She was also very regretful with what she had done to her mother. She shows a little sympathy for how she treated her. She said things like," And after seeing, once again, my mother's disappointed face, something inside me began to die." ( ) She was felling upset because she could tell her mother felt disappointed. She started to realize she did care how her mother felt. She also realized she could hurt her mother. She say's, "By then I saw my mother's face, her stricken face. The audience clapped weakly, and I walked back to my chair, with my whole face quivering as I tried not to cry." ( ) This shows how she did feel really upset when she disappointed her mother. .

Jing-Mei is also an underperformer she doesn't succeed in things and she doesn't try to.
