Reflection Paper
At first, when entering Carlow College, the thought of having to complete all of the required courses instilled some fear into me. My idea of college, was simply engaging in the courses that I would need to complete the requirements of my major. Not only did I consider this so-called “liberal arts” education a burden, but also something that would get in the way of my progress. However, after now completing my first year of school, and changing my major several times, I realize that this type of education is not only helpful, but necessary. I now see liberal arts as an opportunity, not an inconvenience. Not only did my first year of school help me to appreciate a liberal arts education, but also, the handout that I received in my Communications Seminar course. Another concept that was discussed that caught my attention was the idea of what Moving on to Carlow’s Mission Statement helps to even more clearly identify what a liberal arts education is. Basically, the goal of a liberal arts education is to have each student at Carlow become a well-rounded person when they leave the institution. As mentioned in the hand-out, in the future, people will need knowledge in several fields not just one, therefore, a liberal arts curriculum is necessary. Obtaining a “liberal arts” education will help me to strive in every aspect of life no matter what changes are made during my lifetime. I would learn about the human existence. Although I know that I am not interested in theology, I did find an area of this study that I could enjoy and expand my knowledge on.
