A Well Known Farmer in Salem


            
             The story "The Crucible," had one of the main characters named John Proctor, who went through many changes. He had an affair with a teenage woman named Abigail Williams, which would lead him into more trouble. In the middle of the story he admits it to the court about his lechery so that Abigail may get in trouble, but she does not. This also contributed to the way he had changed, because no one had expected him to admit to doing such a crime. John Proctor had a very respected past, had very interesting thoughts, and changed throughout this account of the witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts. .
             John Proctor's past was very monotone and consisted of a normal person's life. He had a wife and 2 kids, and his wife is pregnant with another. He was a well known farmer in the small town of Salem, and hadn't been convicted of a crime ever. Salem was composed of only Puritans. He was having an affair with a teenager, and while she wanted it to continue, he realized it was the wrong thing to do. He told her his feelings for her were over and he did not know her in that way. He loved his wife and children dearly and there were events that people in this story had never expected to take place. .
             There were many characteristics about John Proctor that made him unique. Many things people did not see or could not see about him slowly became relevant as time went on. He knew that admitting to the court would humiliate him and his name around the village, but it was what he had to do. If he did this, it could stop the girls from getting any more people around the village killed. Elizabeth and John loved each other so much, and she thought that she should protect him and not tell the court that she knew about the affair. She thought that he would not tell the court in order to protect himself. He did and Elizabeth was accused of lying to the court. .
             Throughout this story, John underwent a few changes.
