Dutch & Mexican

There are a large number of Dutch and Mexicans living in Chicago. The Dutch government encouraged people to emigrate to America that’s how the arrived to the US. The majority of the Dutch population in the US lives in California, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Illinois, Florida, Washington and Iowa. Mexicans mainly came for work.

The religion usually associated with the Dutch is Dutch Christian Reformed. The church kept strict rules about moral behavior and the sale of intoxicating liquors was prohibited. The religious leaders also disapproved of dancing, gambling and the theatre. The Mexican culture is usually associated with the Catholic.

To the Dutch even when it is nobody's birthday, you are still confronted with birthdays every day. Most Dutch people display a birthday calendar in the bathroom, so they don’t forget anyone’s birthday. Santa Claus was introduced to the USA by Dutch settlers. New Year’s Eve is a family occasion. The first night is to remember the little ones that have died. The second night is to remember ancestors. Goodies sold are destined for the buyer's offering to the dead. In Mexico the Christmas festivities begin nine days before Christmas this represents the period when Mary and Joseph were seeking shelter before the birth of Jesus. It ends January 6th when the Three Wise Men reached the Christ Child and presented him with gifts. Modern influences have introduced the Christmas tree and Santa Claus. Christmas itself is usually celebrated on Christmas eve in Mexico with a midnight mass and a late dinner. The children don’t get gifts until the 6th.

The traditional costume is hardly ever worn anymore in Holland. The most famous part of the Dutch costume are the wooden shoes. They are worn by many farmers as cheap, long-lasting and safe working shoes. Sombreros are worn by Mexican ranchers to protect them from the hot sun. Serapes are colorful blankets that are used to keep warm. Women dancers wear a full skirt and short-sleeved blouse with a colored sash worn around the waste. In some Mexican villages they wear more traditional clothing, such as clothes that are hand woven and embroidered with bright colors. However, Mexicans wear clothes that are similar to the clothes worn in the United States but in business they dress more professional.
