Exploration

The motives of exploration during the age of discovery during the 16th century were really important for the people living in that century. There were different kind and plenty of motives to choose from. Some of the motives are glory, greed, god, political/economic competition. Glory was the desire of wealth. It was more like a personal fame. Greed was the search for spices and gold. The motive god was to win as many converts possible to Christianity. The motives of exploration were like the opening doors for the trade that started all around the world. Exploration during the age of discovery led to European economic dominance. As you know, European began to explore for a variety of reasons. The most significant reason was greed, the search for spices and gold, because almost everyone was looking for spices and gold and also finding routes to Asia and India for spices and gold, and explorers make that their top priority. I think they could also achieve these other goals or motives by this one. Because if they have a lot of spices and gold, they can achieve motives like glory. They can do much more with it.

The search for wealth was the most important motive because so many people were

Christopher Columbus was born in Italy in the Italian seaport of Genoa in 1451. He was an Italian mariner and outstanding navigator and organizer of expeditions, widely believed to be the first European to sail across the Atlantic Ocean and successfully land on the American continent. He achieved fame by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a sea route to Asia. But he did not accomplish this goal. Instead, he encountered islands in the Caribbean Sea. At that time, the people of Europe and the Americas did not know of each other's existence. During his four voyages westward--between 1492 and 1504--Columbus explored what are now the West Indies and the coasts of Central and South America. Columbus was the eldest son of Domenico Colombo, a wool-worker and small-scale merchant, and his wife, Susanna Fontanarossa; he had two younger brothers, Bartholomew and Diego. He received little formal education and was a largely self-taught man, later learning to read Latin and write Castilian. He was born to a family of wool weavers. At the age of 14 he went to the sea. He visited a lot of courts of kings and queens of Europe to gain their support asking for help and money. Finally, Ferdinand and Isabella, the king and queen of Spain agreed to support Columbus. In the 15th and 16th centuries most Europeans were looking for sea routes to the East. Columbus also wanted to find a new sea route to the Far East, to India, China, Japan and the Spice Islands. If he achieves his goals by reaching these lands he would be bringing back rich cargoes of silks and spices.

He was born in Sines, Portugal. He attended school in the town of Evora. As a young man, he learned astronomy and navigation. He became a naval officer in 1492 and commanded ships along the coast of Portugal. In 1497, King Manuel I of Portugal asked Da Gamma to find a sea route to India by sailing around Africa. The kind wanted Da Gamma to establish trade with India. Da Gamma’s father had been chosen to lead the expedition, but he died before the plans were completed. Da Gamma commanded four ships, including the Berrio, the Saint Gabriel, and the Saint Raphael. He had a total crew of about 170 men. The equipment he had for navigation included were compasses, an instrument called an astrolabe, and astronomical charts.

Since Columbus knew that the world was round and he realized that by sailing west, instead of east around the coast of Africa, as other explorers of that time were doing, he would still reach the East and the rich Spice Islands. Columbus wanted to sail west because he thought that by sailing west he would find a quicker and easier route to the East. The also thought that the earth was smaller than it is, and like all other Europeans at that time, he did not know about the existence of America. In 1492, Columbus set sail from Palos in Spain with three ships. Two were Portuguese caravels, the Nina and the Pinta, small ships with triangular sails. The third, the Santa Maria, was a nao, a larger square-rigged ship. Ships were about 15 and 36 meters long and between them 90 men were carried.. He was also given titles and he was made Admiral of the Ocean Sea and Governor of the Indies. Columbus also made other journeys across the Atlantic Ocean. Columbus died in 1506, a lonely and disappointed man. He died still believing that he had found a new route to the East Indies. Although on his fourth voyage he landed on the Sout
