The Maya lived is the area of Central America which is now Yucatan,
Guatemala, Belize and southern Mexico. They were a Stone Age people, meaning
they only had tools of stone to work with. In other areas of the world this is
considered to be a primitive state, but one need only look at the architecture of the
ancient Maya to see how very non-primitive they were. But to limit their
acheivements to their architecture, while it is spectacular, would be underselling
the truly amazing accomplishments of these ancient societies. The Mayans were
not just architects, they were skilled mathmatitians, astronomers, devlepoed a
complex system of writing, as well as calendrics. As far as the most impressive
civilzations of the world go, we have no choice but to list the Maya amoung them.
The Mayan system of writing was extremely complex. It was a
