1984

In 1948, George Orwell wrote a book predicting the world in 1984. England would be controlled by a country called Oceania, where the government would be run by a dictator. Under Big Brother¡¦s rule, people would eat bad food and drink awful alcohol. The ruling party does everything to gain control over the people. They even manipulate history to reach their goal of keeping power.

The reality of history is frozen by the party while the past is dependent on memories and written record. Party manipulation is used repeatedly to benefit their survival. Ultimately, the tyranny makes people think that Big Brother is always right. The dictator forces on people the idea of ¡§doublethink¡¨ which people are stuck between the truth and the lie. It confuses people with an ideology that contains two opposing view points. As a result, people are confused and do not really know which viewpoint is the truth. In chapters one through four, Winston has to modify four errors from different "times". The party changes facts and lies to people. "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered."
