1984

In 1948, George Orwell wrote a book predicting the world in 1984. England would be controlled by a country called Oceania, where the government would be run by a dictator. Under Big Brother¡¦s rule, people would eat bad food and drink awful alcohol. The ruling party does everything to gain control over the people. They even manipulate history to reach their goal of keeping power.

The reality of history is frozen by the party while the past is dependent on memories and written record. Party manipulation is used repeatedly to benefit their survival. Ultimately, the tyranny makes people think that Big Brother is always right. The dictator forces on people the idea of ¡§doublethink¡¨ which people are stuck between the truth and the lie. It confuses people with an ideology that contains two opposing view points. As a result, people are confused and do not really know which viewpoint is the truth. In chapters one through four, Winston has to modify four errors from different "times". The party changes facts and lies to people. "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered." Winston has really strong conscious. He believes that no one can break the law of nature. ¡§Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four.¡¨ ¡§I know that you will fail. There is something in the universe- I don¡¦t know, some spirit, some principle- that you will never over come.¡¨ Winston tries to fight for his beliefs. They torture him, starve him, and try to brain wash him, yet Winston still continues to believe in his own beliefs. He still loves his girlfriend Julia and refuses to love Big Brother. This is another reason why the sexual act is suppressed because dictatorship wants the people to love Big Brother only. We can see that from ¡§you hate him. Good. Then the time has come for you to take the last step. You must love Big Brother. It is not enough to obey him: You must love him.¡¨ Winston gives up his principle in ¡§101 room.¡¨ He betrays himself and Julia. In the end, Winston feels oddly free, in an ironic way when he returns to his normal life. He believes 2+2=5 can be true. He fear and loves Big Brother, and he enjoys the victories of the war. This is what the party wants his people to be like, to be obedient to their ideals.

Another way of controlling people¡¦s thoughts is to make a new type of language called ¡§Newspeak.¡¨ This takes away the meaning of words, which also assists in destroying history. ¡§Don¡¦t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?¡¨ (p.46) All of the words change from complicated to simple, its goal is to eliminate the range of people¡¦s thought and decrease the number of ¡§thought-criminals.¡¨ With limitations on words, people cannot easily express their feelings. This was good for the party because they would not have to wo
