Throughout the stage of adolescence, they face many social, emotional and physical changes. Adolescents are going through a stage of identity verses role confusion, trying to find out who they are. Some adolescents go down the wrong path in life possibly dealing with peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, sexual intercourse and violent behaviors. A main factor that can affect adolescent social and emotional development is their lifestyle and or environment. Adolescent coming from poverty background, tend to have a higher risk of juvenile delinquency.
Juvenile delinquency is said to be “a broad range of child and adolescent behaviors, including social behaviors, status offenses and criminal acts.” Juvenile delinquencies are stereotyped as being bad teenagers, but people don’t full understand juvenile delinquents reasoning for doing that act or behaving in such ways. Some ways in which we could help is by meeting the needs of our adolescents. Many adolescents get in trouble because they do the wrong thing at the wrong time. It is important that parents are involved in their children's lives because that plays a big part of their self esteem and direction in life. Parents or teachers should give those children who are known as bad responsibilities because it would build their self esteem. It will allow the bad children too feel needed and to take on a responsibility. Family involvement and collaboration with the schools and community can help prevent crime for ongoing teenagers. Most importantly, teachers truly do mold adolescents by their interaction with time spent with them. After school day care also prevents crime and violence on the street. It is known that juvenile violence is the highest in the afternoon hours between 3 and 7pm. Children are unsupervised during these times after school.
