For centuries, Moroccan crafts have been justifiably world-famous, both for their variety and quality. Bargains in handicrafts, such as leather, brass, copper, gold and silver jewelry, rug, traditional clothing, needlework and carved woods, are found everywhere. Always remember that haggling over the price is considered a fine art in Morocco. It is not a confrontation but rather a friendly, courteous discussion that benefits both the buyer and the seller.

The city’s famous site is Tour Hassan, an uncompleted 12th century mosque; the Mohammed V Mausoleum, an outstanding example of traditional Moroccan architecture; the Royal Palace; the Chellah, with superb monuments, delightful gardens and Roman ruins; the Oudaias; the National Museum of Handicrafts. Also worth a visit is Salé, Rabat’s twin city, at the opposite side of the river, believed to have been founded in the 11th century (Fodor’s 56).

Founded in 1062, Marrakech was once the capital of an empire, which stretched from Toledo to Senegal (Fodor’s 47). Called the ‘Pink City’ because of the color of the local earth used in its construction, it is a city of labyrinthine alleyways, secluded palaces, museums, mosques and markets. The city’s gardens are still supplied with water from the 11th-century underground irrigation canals (Fodor’s 48). Its exciting and bewildering place in the Djemmaa-el-Fna (Place of the Dead), the city square, comes alive after nightfall; thronged with dancers, fortune-tellers, musicians, acrobats, storytellers and snake charmers. Suggested sightseeing: the magnificent Koutoubia mosque, Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, the Menara and Aquedal gardens. An hour’s drive from Marrakech is Oukaimeden, Morocco’s best ski resort. This trip can be combined with a visit to Ourika and Asni. The latter is an excellent base for visiting Mount Toubkal, Morocco’s highest mountain.
