I Survived
I grabbed the handle on the door to my right and attempted to get out of the smoking car. I glanced to my left and noticed that my mother was bleeding badly and struggling to free her feet from beneath the brake pedal. My sister, who was riding in the back seat behind the driver’s side, had pried her door open and escaped to help my mother. I pulled myself halfway out of the car, but when my hands hit the pavement below me, I passed out. My eyes were closed but I could feel pressure against my temples. Two men were shining a light into my eyes and explaining to me how they would remove my body from the mangled car. The Emergency Medical Technicians stabilized my head and neck onto a backboard and loaded me into the ambulance. We rode the siren the entire way to Nassau County Medical Center. I was immediately rushed to the emergency room. Doctors were surrounding me asking me questions. Several nurses were hooking my arms to intravenous tubes. My mother was shouting to me from behind a curtain in the emergency room. She said, “Liz, don’t worry. Everything will be fine.” She kept saying that
what had happened to me. I had internal bleeding near my lucky. None of my doctors knew how or why my spleen had on the corner of his bed and stroked his forehead. I
