Canada History X

In the middle of the 1770’s the world was in the brink of new nation, the American Revolution was sweeping the 13 colonies of North America. By 1783, the revolution ended and created a new nation called the United States of North America. This new nation believed in liberty and freedom, any one who did not support this idea but supported the ideas of Great Britain (colonization) was considered a treat to freedom and was driven out of the country. These people who supported the British government were called the “Loyalist”. During the revolution and after it many Loyalists were kicked out of United States and sent to England or Canada. The American people consider Loyalists as traitors, since they supported British rule rather than freedom; on the other hand the Loyalists are considered heroes in England and Canada, because they stuck with the king of Great Britain. Most of the Loyalist who left America came to British North America, and eventually they become a creator of new nation called Canada. This essay will examine where the Loyalist came from? Who they were? Where they settled in British North America?, and their influence on it.

by Sir John Johnston, a leader of the western loyalists in 1785. In 1791 the Constitutional act divided Quebec in to Upper and Lower Canada, each with separate and distinct governments. The loyalists also had Americanized ideas, such as free trade with anyone. The British government does not allow its colonies to trade with any colonies, which were not under British control. On the other hand the loyalists were trading with Americans. “Canada can supply United States with every article they want…Lumber, Fish, Horses and some Provision…The fund of timber is literally inexhaustible.” This was a letter from Maritime loyalists; it shows their ideas of becoming less dependent on British government, and more dependent on themselves. The loyalists shaped British North America to what became Canada and they introduced effective ways of farming and they created educational system separated from the church.

ided in three: those who supported the revolution, those who supported Great Britain’s colonization, and those who supported either of them. As the war progressed the Revolution was gaining support and the American freedom fighters were wining the war. The Americans believed that if a person was not supporting them he/she supported the British government. Benjamin Franklin, one of the leaders of the revolution describes loyalists as follows, “the name loyalist was improperly assumed by these people. Royalists they may perhaps be called. But the true loyalists were the people of America, against whom they acted.1” This shows the American view of loyalist, at that time the loyalist were seen as people who had everything to loss if the British were beaten. At some cases this were true but all the people who were kicked out of United States that were considered loyalist were not merchants or government workers, who’s lives depended on the survival of British rule. It is very difficult to estimate the number of loyalists that were kicked out of United States, but there are approximation which totaled between 90,000 to160,000. It is estimated approximately 49,000 came to British North American, the re
