Gun Control in the US

Gun control has become an increasingly hot debate in the United States since the beginning of the 20th century. Gun advocates are pushing for total freedom to buy whatever gun someone desires. If these people had their way you could pick up an AK-47 on your way to work in the morning, and then could pick up an M-4 Rifle on the way back from the grocery store. If you let just anyone own an assault rifle, then why stop people from owning their own grenade launcher? Both are meant for killing huge masses of people and not for self-defense. Gun control advocates are doing what they can to limit guns in civilians’ hands, but this is with limited success at best. Gun control proponents claim they have had victories, but when it is broken down, nothing has really been accomplished. Although gun control proponents have good intentions, they have done very little to actually accomplish anything, or gain any ground against their opponents incorrect claims.

Gun control advocates have done what they can to limit gun possession, but have come up empty handed. A Prime example of this, is The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (Brady Law), which was passed in 1993. This law requires licensed fired arm dealers to do a background c

Arianna Huffington, of the Washington Times National Weekly, sums up the situation in this country perfectly "You can buy a handgun anywhere on the street for $40, or they give it to you for free if you tell your gang you're on your way to shoot someone (Just Facts).” Neither side has accomplished anything, they just stand around and fight with each other while nothing gets done. Both sides need to stop being so stubborn, and realize that this situation is just like any other; the answer is somewhere in the middle.

Gun control opponents on the other hand, have been claiming “self defense” for as long as they have been around. However, it makes as little sense now, as it did seventy-five years ago. In cases where the victim has a gun for self-defense, the attacker is wounded one out of one hundred times, and is killed only one out of one thousand times (Just Facts). If someone breaks into a house for a random burglary, the homeowner most likely won’t even hear the perpetrator at all, so having a gun for this matter does not really help. Only thirteen percent of gun owners have actually used their gun for self-defense (Just Facts). If someone wants to kill another person, they are not going to come up and challenge him or her to a dual. They will walk up behind them, and shoot them in the back of the head, or even better, shoot them from across the room. Most people don’
