Noh and Ut-Napishtim
Growing up, I had always heard the stories from the Bible. I learned them both at church and at home. So imagine my surprise to see that there is a book that is from another country and time that has many similarities to the Bible. I had never heard of Gilgamesh until I came to Converse and heard the others talking about reading it in IDC. The one story that has the most similarities is Noah and the flood. In the Bible there is a story about Noah and his family at the time the flood covered the earth. In Gilgamesh, the Noah figures name is Ut-Napishtim. These two stories are basically identical with many common points. In Genesis, mankind had become wicked and sinned very much and in Gilgamesh the people were no
isy and plentiful. So God, or the gods, decided to cover the earth with water to drown the wicked people and everything else on the planet. God, or the gods, needed one righteous man, who was Noah or Ut-Napishtim, whom I will call hero through out the paper. God, or the gods commanded the hero to build the wooden ark. In both stories, the hero complained about this commandment. The hero was told, in both stories to seal the ark with pitch, build it with many compartments, have one door and at least one window. The hero was then commanded to take his family on to the ark as well as two of every kind of land animal.
