Do you sometimes feel delusional? Do you say to yourself, “I must be hallucinating?” Well, these are just a few symptoms of schizophrenia. Do you know what schizophrenia is? If your answer is no, then now is the time to pay attention. I begin to gain interest in schizophrenia when it was first introduced to me in my Health and Safety class, during my sophomore year in high school. Today, I am going to explain to you what schizophrenia is, the major symptoms, and the expectations for those who have schizophrenia.According to Scientific American, “Schizophrenia is psychiatric disorder in which previously normal cognitive abilities and behaviors become disturbed. Schizophrenia is not having multiple personalities, it is not having split personalities, it is not caused by childhood trauma, it is not caused by bad parenting, it is not caused by poverty, and it is not the result of any action or personal failure by the individual. Paranoid Schizophrenia can be characterized by strong delusions or hallucinations. Delusions are bizarre, false beliefs that seem real to the person with schizophrenia, but they are not real, a person may believe that aliens or spies are controlling his or her behavior, mind and thoughts, sometimes these delusions can be of a paranoid nature, so they will begin to think someone is “out to get them.” Delusions may also be of grandiosity, in these cases, people believe that they are someone important, like a president, king or prime minister. Hallucinations are bizarre, unreal perceptions of the environment. These hallucinations can be auditory, which is, hearing voices, sometimes the “voices” tell a person to do something; visual, which is, seeing lights, objects or faces; olfactory, which is, smelling things; and tactile, for example, feeling that bugs are crawling on or under their skin.
