Lord of the Flies (theme)
There are several themes that the book The Lord of the Flies has. The major theme is the conflict between civilization and savagery. This theme is built up during the course of the story through the boy’s actions. The theme is shaped through three different parts of the story: Ralph’s reign as leader, the fight between Ralph and Jack, and Jack’s reign as leader. The boys start out civilized under the rule of Ralph, and revert back to savages with Jack as ruler. First of all, the story starts out with all the boys separated. After blowing the conch shell, Ralph gathers all the kids together to have their first meeting. During the meeting, the boys choose Ralph as their leader, and, knowing Jack wanted to be leader, Ralph declares the choirboys the hunters and Jack their leader. With this election, the civilized time of the story begins. “’We’ll have rules!’ (Jack) cried excitedly. ‘Lot
After one of the meetings, Jack gets very angry that Ralph isn’t taken out of his leadership role and goes off on his own. This is the point when everyone starts turning into savages. After that, the other kids go one by one to join Jack’s new tribe. They live like savages, killing one mother pig and keeping its head on a stick. They raid Ralph’s camp one time, trying to get the rest of the kids to join his tribe by coming to the feast. At the feast, the boys get scared when Simon comes, thinking he is the ghost, and kill him, leaving only 4 people not in Jack’s tribe, Ralph, Piggy, Sam, and Eric. After Piggy dies, and Sam and Eric are forced into Jack’s tribe, Ralph is the only one left. Jack’s tribe hunts down Ralph like savages trying to kill him until they see an officer.
