What makes a society? People. However, the differences between those people are what make a society great. Anthem, a book written by Ayn Rand, is set in the future. Earth has died and been reborn. It is now a place where conformity is mandatory. It is a place where your mind, your thoughts, and even your body is not your own. It is a place where muttering the word “I” could get you killed. These days people grimace and roll their eyes when they hear the word “ego”. Any Rand’s book Anthem demonstrates that the egoism is a beneficial and necessary part of any society.
The world today has a distorted idea of the word “ego.” Being called an egoist is an insult. It is the same as being called conceited. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary actually equates the word “ego” with the word “self-esteem: a confidence
and satisfaction in oneself.” Like too much of anything, too much ego can be bad; however, an ego itself is useful and good. Like other good things, egoism is necessary. It is certainly helpful too Prometheus, the central character in Anthem.
Equality 7-2521 was Prometheus label before he appointed himself a name. He was different from his “bothers” from the start. He was tall, strong, and born with a mind that tended to think for itself. In his society it is a sin to think what your brothers do not, to have what your brothers cannot. It is wrong to distinguish yourself from another or acknowledge one persons individual accomplishments.
