Back in the winter of 2000, I played a lot of basketball. I played on AAU teams and school teams. I made the freshman basketball team that winter, and I was very excited to play. Around that same time I really got into snowboarding and I went every weekend, but I wanted to make it everyday. I was offered a position to teach snowboarding to beginners at Wachusett Mountain; and I took it right away.
This decision was hard, however. My parents didn’t want me to quit basketball because they said it wouldn’t look good to colleges. I felt bad leaving the basketball team because it was like leaving basketball for good. Also, I knew I wouldn’t be a part of a team anymore, I would hang out with those kids anymore. I knew that the right choice was to work as an instructor. I was living the life that I wanted, and still want for my future. I was getting paid to do something that I love to do. I enjoy everything about the lifestyle of snowboarding, everything it takes to be a professional snowboarder. I like to do it alone, with my friends, with family, for competition, for filming, for building jumps, and for hiking. There are a million other small things about it that put a smile on my face. I met a lot of my good friends from snowboarding, so it also expands my social life. When I got out for a day of snowboarding, the first thing I do is stretch.
