Record Analysis Report
Make a collection of record covers, CD covers from a variety of periods. Make a detailed report on the design features employed, type of graphic rendering techniques used and the influences of the period the overall design. Over the years we have gone from records to tapes to CDs. The extent of change over the years, of just the covers is amazing and this is mostly due to the advancing in technology, as will be shown to you in this essay which will discuss the changes in record covers over a variety of periods. Figure one “The Age Of The Atlantic (1969) uses no lines or outlines. It contains many colours Primary and Secondary. It is made from plasticine there fore it is 3D. There is limited pattern, but the pattern that is there is in the blimp, the record player and the butterfly. The only cropping that is used is cropping of the background. There is no hierarchy in this image. Figure one compared to figure two “Relics – Pink Floyd” (1971), is extremely different. Figure two uses a strong use of thin lines. Figure two is totally black and white and is a drawing. A similarity between figure one and figure two is they both contain a limited amount of texture. Figure two is 2D. Figure two, unlike figure one is fairl
Technology has had an amazing affect on the record industry. Throughout time designers have been able to create pleasant images from photographs, drawings, models, plasticine etc. Now days with our modern technology designers are able to create bright, simplified or detailed images with fantastic fonts and images at the tough of a button. Not only is the facilities they use to create the images better, the printing and processing of these images has also came a long way. In my opinion technology is by far the best thing that could have happened for the record industry – not only the record industry but also any industry at all. The artist who designed the cover for figure one (1969) barley used any rendering techniques as the record cover he/she designed was made from plasticine. The only rendering that they used was on an animal that looks like a sheep and they used lost of lines bunched up together. This didn’t not so much for the record as it doesn’t make the animal look real; it just creates some pattern on it. The CD cover, figure four (2000), also barley includes any rendering because the main subject matter; being the people, is a photograph. The background contains fire, if this image was created back in the 60’s or earlier, the fire would probably have had to had been photographed or drawn, which would have included a great deal of rendering. It is easy to tell the fire in the background if figure four was computer generated.
