Gangs
I chose gangs as my research topic for a current urban issue. I found that there are many newspaper articles and journals discussing this topic, as it is a major issue that many urban and suburban areas are dealing with daily. I read articles that discussed the fact gangs are on the rise and areas in which gangs have recently been forming and gathering. The first article I will discuss is from the Toronto Star. The title of the article is “U.S. Fears Resurgence of Gang Violence”. The main point of this article is that there is so much focus on terrorism these days, people aren’t aware that the amount of gang-related violence in America is rising. In cities such as Los Angeles and Oakland in California and Little Rock Arkansas, the rate of homicides is up this year. Many of these homicides involve gang members and innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of gang violence. Other cities where gangs haven’t been a big issue such as Philadelphia, New York, and Miami, have been experiencing either no change at all or a decline in the rate of homicides. In conclusion, gang violence is on the rise once again in the United States. There were many years in which it was suppressed and for the most part under control by the authorities. It seems as though we turned our heads as a nation thinking that we had street violence under control. The rise and spread of this type of violence should teach us an important lesson in managing funds and research in the areas that need it in the United States. This is a very important issue and should be treated as one. The next article I used for my research is titled “Unwittingly, California Exports Gang Violence”. In the article, a housing project just a few miles northwest of the Las Vegas strip is discussed. Over the past few years gang violence has increased significantly. A few years ago, there was virtually no gang violence. Now there are frequent crimes and murders that are gang related. Areas like this and others in the Sun Belt are now commonplaces for gangs to spring up. The reason for this rise is simple, families have left Los Angeles and moved east, but have taken the gang related culture with them. Now that these areas have turned into metropolises the many problems of big cities such as L.A. have become all too familiar. Families have left big cities like Los Angeles and relocated to the southwest for many reasons, ranging from the stalled California economy to hope for a better life for children away from gangs. It has not been a conscious effort on the part of the gangs to have new territory. Families move, their children keep their ties to the gangs they were a part of in the bigger cities, and therefore create new chapters of the gang in the new area. Tucson Arizona has been greatly affe
