Types of Elections


             Nomination of candidates for political offices. In which many different candidates run against each other for the position their running for. This has been going on since the beginning of our nation; a system had to be devised so that everyone would have a relatively fair chance at becoming elected. Here is a list of seven different types of primaries:.
             1) Direct Primary: The most widely used method of making nominations in American politics; an intra-party nominating election at which those who vote choose a party's candidates to run in the general election.
             2) Closed Primary: Form of the direct primary in which only declared party members might vote.
             3) Open Primary: Form of the direct primary in which any qualified voter may participate without regard to his/her party allegiance.
             4) Blanket Primary: A nomination election in which voter may switch from one party's primary to another on an office-to-office basis.
             5) Runoff Primary: A second primary, involving the two font-runners in the first contest; held where election law requires a majority vote for nomination.
             6) Nonpartisan Primary: A nomination election where the candidates are not identified by party labels. .
             7) Presidential Primary: Election at which a party's voters (1) choose some or all of a State party organization's delegates to that party's national convention, and/or (2) express a preference among various contenders for the party's presidential nomination. .
             The first time a direct primary was used was in Wisconsin in 1903, now it is the most widely used form or nominating a candidate. Each state has devised their own laws about elections, primaries and which type will be used to do so. The state also provides the date of the voting, a polling place, election officials, registration lists, and ballots. There are two types of direct primaries: the open primary and the closed primary. .
             Open Primary.
             1. Comprises the secrecy of the ballot, because it forces voters to make their party preferences known in public.
