Character Casting of Hope Leslie
Before I begin to cast the main characters of Hope Leslie, I would like to specify that the name listed beside the the number one is my first choice because of the appearance and ability of that actor or actress to complete the certain role I have assigned to them. The assignment of my second choice was hard but I based it on that actor's/actress's ability to perform a role as such. After analyzing my work, please realize I placed the characters of this novel with people I knew and could picture playing the role. I am sure none of them are perfect for the part, but in my mind they would make this into a great movie.Mel Gibson is the perfect person for any leading role because he can do it all. I see him relating best to William because William is a man who wants his own life away from the rest of the town, thus he resides in Bethel. Being away though still loses him no respect from the townspeople as can be seen in their grief for his wife and help in finding his boy. Gibson and Connery are both strongly respected and sincere and would play the part of William Fletcher very well.
This part needed someone who seemed very loyal. Digby really proves himself when leading the way to find Everell and convincing everyone not to give up. He is a very strong willed man that believes in getting the job done. Also, Digby followed every command that Mrs. Fletcher asked of him and only questioned the one’s that he thought might put her family in harms way, such as the one about taking Grafton up to the town. Daniel Day-Lewis was my number one choice because of his never give up attitude and both him and Grant because of their kind and loyal look. Tantoo would be the better over Bates over for she is Native American and would fit the look perfect. Other than that both actresses could play the role of the little old lady who does not appear very often but when she does, she seems to bring something to the table, as in the case of the rattle and arrow.
