Many different characteristics factor into forming a successful team, and as more and more companies and corporations are realizing the significance and value teams bring to the business, the more imperative it has become to identify the dynamics of an award winning team. The four most crucial pieces to build a profitable team are determining a common goal, understanding and applying different abilities, forming mutual accountability and trust, and practicing conflict resolution. With out these four key dynamics, there will not be a solid foundation to form a successful team. Team dynamics, as defined by Merriam Webster Dictionary (http://www.m-w.com) are as follows: 4 : a number of persons associated together in work or activity: as a : a group on one side (as in football or a debate) 1 : a branch of mechanics that deals with forces and their relation primarily to the motion but sometimes also to the equilibrium of bodies 2 : a pattern or process of change, growth, or activity 3 : variation and contrast in force or intensity (as in music) 1: the interacting forces within a small
Resolving conflicts effectively includes three main steps. First, the conflict must be identified. Although this is not a task that is ever approached with enthusiasm it is necessary to continue the process of resolution. Secondly the conflicting issues must be addressed. This task is even trickier than the first. It requires a great amount of tact and professionalism at times in order to successfully address this area without causing more damage than the team is trying to fix. Finally a solution must be found and agreed upon amongst the entire team. This sounds simple but this entails going back to square one and starting the process of approval all over. One aspect that is often overlooked in the resolution process is that the team charter may be revised throughout the team’s existence in order to mediate any conflict as well as prevent future conflict. Once there is a firm grasp on the conflicting issues, it should be presumptive that resolution can be reached quickly. When conflict continues unaddressed or ignored, the problem will only escalate into possible team failure. Conflict will not be resolved until the entire team identifies the problem and agrees upon a solution. Unfortunately, trust and mutual accountability are not consistently seen in teams. This is where conflict resolution plays a large roll in all teams. Conflict is inevitable, just as change is inevitable. Many reasons for conflict with in teams are: age, race, political beliefs, recognition, greed, and change of emotions. Everyone will not always see eye to eye, therefore conflict is bound to occur at one point or another in a team structure. More importantly is the level of conflict the team rises to.
