In the essay “University Days”, author James Thurber uses two students’ experiences to show the humor of college. First, Thurber describes a student named Bolenciecwcz, a football star at Ohio State. He is not very intelligent when it comes to school or anything else. “While he was not dumber than an ox he was not any smarter” (Thurber 236) and his professors must assist him in class. Bolenciecwcz must keep up his grades in order to be eligible to play, so “most of his professors [are] lenient and [help] him along.” (236

Thurber not only finds humor in his fellow peers and professors, he also find humor in his own actions. In his Botany class, Thurber shares with the reader how he cannot see the plant cells through the microscope. After Thurber takes a deferred pass, he tries to pass the class once more. He is still unable to see the plant cells, “[he] sees what looks like a lot of milk.” (235) After trying every adjustment of the microscope, Thurber finally sees something. He draws what he thinks are plant cells. When the professor looks at it, he lost control of his temper. Thurber also talks about his military drill class. What is humorous about this class is that Thurber is the oldest member on the drill team. As a senior, he finally gets it right. General Littlefield told Thurber that “[he was] the main trouble with [the] university.” (238) The general later changes his mind about Thurber after Thurber finally got the drills correct.
