The Holocaust was a very difficult time for the people who suffered through it. Also, for the people who stood aside and watched as innocent people were killed based on their religion, sexual preference, hair color, or eye color. This horrible era in time influenced many people to publish works of literature. Many published poetry, novels, and short stories. One of these authors was Elie Wiesel.

Adolf Hitler was a very powerful dictator who came to power in Germany on January 30, 1933 (Levin 28). Hitler hated the Jewish people, thus he was an Anti-Semite. The Holocaust: Death Camps states, “Hitler’s racism and anti-semitism became the central tenet of his Nazi Party’s ideology and was the driving force behind German conduct and policy during World War II” (Roleff 11). Since Hitler did not like Jews, he thought he could rid the world of them. Hitler thought that Jewish people were to blame for all the world’s troubles (Roleff 11). Concentration camps started shortly after Hitler took power of Germany. The very first camp to open in Germany was Dachau (Roleff 11). In Chapter Three, the Jews finally reach Auschwitz. This is were the selection begins. The prisoners are led to believe that they are going to be killed (Wiesel 30). When Wiesel and his father reach the pit, they are commanded to turn left and head to their barracks (Wiesel 30). By this time, they had been stripped of their clothes, covered in petrol, and their hair cut off (Wiesel 33). In coming this far, the Jewish people no longer felt any emotions. They can no longer think about each other, they have to survive for themselves.
