Ethical Obligations of Advanced Technology Laboratories

As a company, we have a responsibility to our customers as well as to ourselves as a company. It has been found that our product is being used in methods of sex selection in countries such as India and China. In these countries, the benefits of having a male child outweigh that of a female. Once the sex is determined, through ultrasound, the baby is often aborted if the fetus is found to be a female. This practice is not the intended purpose of our product, however, in today’s world sex selection by way of ultrasound is a real issue.

The firm needs to consider the future, and one aspect of this future is expansion. The two most likely markets for the company are the very two that would cause the most controversy, India and China. They are the markets with the most room for growth as well as with the highest increase in population. Our company deals directly with handling and ensuring the health of an increasing population. If the company was able to offer the doctors something comparable to what they receive, it may reduce their motivation for performing these abortions. Some sort of check system would need to be implemented, in order to ensure that the doctors are not receiving the incentive as well as continuing to perform the abortions. The drawback to this option is that it may become costly.

It is our social responsibility as a company to address this problem. This issue will affect us until some solution is reached, ultrasound is a helpful tool in determining health of both mother and child, and right now its abilities are being abused. If these practices continue we will have a vast number of long-term effects as a company and as a society that allows this practice to continue. We need to be concerned with our company and things like profits and profitability, but we also have a responsibility to society which need to be addressed as well. There are a number of potential solutions addressed, and a number that have not yet been addressed. Together as a company, we can co
