The main character in this book is difficult to determine because the book does not portray an experience of a character in the book, but rather the author himself; Elie Wiesle. Elie is retelling his experiences during the Holocaust, and the struggles Jews endured. Aside from Elie, his father, is the only other main character in the book.

One example of the shocking acts of the Germans that stands out occurred at the end of the war, when Elie and the rest of the camp is being forced to transfer to Gleiwitz. This transfer is a long and tiring journey for all that were involved. The weather was painfully cold, and snow fell heavily; the distance was greater than most people today will even dream of walking.
