Langston Hughes

Langston Hughes witnessed things no person should have to witness at any point during his or her life. An execution, a tragic accident, and a suicide all occurred before he finally left for Columbia. These events helped to shape Langston into the man he became later on in life. In “The Big Sea,” Langston Hughes’ autobiography, readers see that these events did not affect him as much as they might affect other people. The book also shows readers the difference in reactions to tragic events between Mexican culture and American culture.

One day as Langston and his father were coming back from their ranch, he witnessed something no one should ever have to see. They were at a place called Las Cruces where he saw the remains of an execution. Three accused Indian bandits were hanging from a tree. They had been robbed of everything but their white trousers. The Federal troops had hanged them there as an example to others and to show them they were taking every situation very serious. Langston, however, did not seem to take it to heart like it was supposed to be taken. He seemed disgusted, but did not seem to have my sympathy for the men. The most reaction he had was that they were “like puppets stiff against the sky

Langston had a near death experience himself. One day, the German’s that worked for his father, Frau Schultz, her daughter Lotte, Frau Kraus, and her daughter Gerta, were all sitting around at the house discussing their past in Germany. Suddenly, an abrupt knock came from the door. Lotte went to answer it, and the brewery master entered. He acted very strangely as he entered the house, not saying a word. As he found the ladies, he pulled out a gun and started to fire on them. He first shot Gerta multiple times until she went down. Then he shot Frau Schultz in the arm, breaking it. After searching the house, he decided to leave and turn himself into the authorities. After the incident occurred, Langston came home and found a police investigation going on. Eventually, he and his father’s friend decided to go to the jail to visit the brewery master. It was then that he discovered the brewery master’s plan. He was in love with Gerta and became extremely jealous because she would always visit Langston’s house. Therefore, the brewery master was thinking that she was in love with Langston. Since he could not have her, he had decided he was going to kill the both of them. When Langston found this out, once again his reaction was incredibly subtle. Almost as if he would not have cared if he would have been shot. All he had to say was “Had I arrived at home that afternoon a half-hour earlier, I probably would not be her
