Concepts Of Sport Analyzation Of Sports Movement

Principles & Concepts Of Physical Activity

There are many concepts of physical activity used in every day exercises and activities. The sport of basketball is an excellent one, there are so many different techniques to improve upon. In this essay I will present the different concepts used in this sport in certain situations, in particular catching a basketball and shooting it. There are very few times in basketball that the player catches the ball completely stationary so I am going to examine the concepts bringing the participant from a run, coming to a sudden stop, receiving the pass and get into a shooting position.

Moving toward the ball is an excellent way to receive a pass, proceeding in a straight line to the player with the ball decreases the amount of time the ball is unprotected. By closing the distance in between the two players the pass becomes much more effective and accurate. Running in a straight line would describe linear motion as well as angular motion by moving around a center point such as the knee. As the player nears the point of contact with the ball momentum

With hands still extended, the player comes into contact with the ball. Having the fingers outstretched at contact greatly increases the amount of surface area, which allows some of the momentum to dissipate through the hands. A player should never catch the ball with his/her fingers due to the possibility of injury, they should only be there to support the ball as it comes into contact with the ball. The ball is moving at a fairly fast rate so its force must be slowly absorbed in order to gain control of the ball. By catching the ball with arms outstretched and bringing it into the body the force the ball had is reduced over a greater amount of time and distance. The arms act as a class 3 lever by catching the ball at shin level. This increases the stability greatly and makes it much easier to receive rather than it hitting the body with its full force, which could cause a deflection or rebound. With both hands on the ball, resting at knee height the player can begin to get ready to shoot.
