Personal Learning Style

As unique individuals we all learn differently. Some people learn by listening, some by hearing, others must have their hands wrapped around the subject. Each and every person has a process by which they learn. One person’s end result of his or her learning process may be vastly different from that of their peers. The following paper will be a personal reflection of my learning style. Through this forum, I will assess my strengths and showcase some opportunities available to me for growth. Finally, knowing one’s learning style can dramatically expand one’s knowledge base. Therefore, an improvement strategy will be created and presented based upon all of the points presented.

First, I began my journey to understand exactly what my learning style consists in. I initially had to answer the question “What is a learning style.” One researcher, Diane Lamarche-Bisson, concludes, “It is a preferred way of acquiring knowledge and processing information. A learning style affects how we learn, how we solve problems, and how we work, how we participate in different activities, how we react in a group, and how we relate to others around us” (268). Another researcher, who introduced

During the course of evaluating my style, I had to simply take a look at how I learn. I had to ask myself, “how do I process information?” I have always been successful in my learning; in retrospect, I cannot remember a time when I could not process the information. I simply may have utilized a different approach. I am not always predictable. Learning to me depends on the setting, depends on me, and how my processor is “feeling” at the time of contact. I learn by grabbing hold of the information and running with it. In other words, tell me what you want me to learn, and let me go to learn it. Allow me to set my own pace, I am able to adjust my “pace setting” so to speak; depending on the circumstances. These circumstances can include the volume of information needed to review, the amount of time available, and my own personal interest in the material.

The first element will be to focus on is time management. I want to implement a time management approach to learning. I will assess the situation before jumping into the various aspects. The critical areas will have a higher priority, grasping the most important aspect may mean the difference between success and failure. Benjamin Franklin once said, “Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of.”
