Coronary heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. Hyperlipidemia is an important modifiable risk factor in the development and progression of coronary heart disease. By optimizing hyperlipidemia therapy several positive clinical outcomes can be achieved. Studies have proven that reduction in cholesterol leads to: improved endothelial function, reduction in inflammatory activity, antioxidant effects of lipid regulation, reduction in platelet thrombogenicity, lesion regression, and most importantly reduction in morbidity and mortality in patients with coronary heart disease.
The hyperlipidemia clinic will focus on two major aspects of hyperlipidemia therapy: primary prevention and secondary prevention. Primary prevention includes lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. Secondary prevention includes using LDL-lowering medications, which have been proven to effectively manage hyperlipidemia resulting in a reduction of cardiac events. This collaborative agreement will establish a hyperlipidemia clinic to be maintained by the clinical pharmacist from the Egan Community Pharmacy, which will collaborate with the Egan Regional Medical Center.
