Brazil became a nation in 1822. It is the fifth largest nation in the world, and is the largest and most populated country in South America. Its population is about 176,000,000 and it has over 8 million sq km of land. In most of the country the climate is warm all year long, except in the southern part where they may experience sub-tropical temperatures. The land consists of flat and rolling lowlands, plains, hills, mountains, and a coastal belt. It is comprised of 26 states and a federal district. The government is a republic with a president and vice-president. The current president is Fernando Henrique Cardoso. The people are a diverse group with many customs and traditions.Brazil is located on the eastern coast of South America. It has a total area of 8,511,965 km2 and is slightly smaller than the United States. Brazil the equator passes through the northernmost area of Brazil. It is bordered by every country in South America, except Chile and Ecuador. To the south of Brazil, you can find Uruguay. Argentina and Paraguay are to the southwest. There were over 1 and a half million Indians and over 50 tribes before the Portuguese settled in Brazil. They still live in the lowlands of Brazil, living by hunting, fishing, and farming off the land. The Guiana Highlands are located within the Amazon lowland. It is a small area containing hills, valleys, and plateaus. Many rivers run in the highlands and pour over the edges to create gorges and wonderful waterfalls. Many minerals are found in the highlands. Some of these minerals are deposits of iron ore, manganese, and bauxite. They were not accessible for many years because of lack of roads or transportation. The dense vegetation prevents people from tapping into these resources. our regions- the Amazon lowland, the Guiana Highlands, the Brazilian Highlands, and the costal plain. Carnival is for all Brazilians. This is the time for them to escape everyday life and enjoy themselves. It is held in February or March. People from throughout the world go to Rio de Janeiro to participate in the festivities. Peoples crowd into the streets dancing, eating, and drinking. Colorful costumes and masks are worn. This has been a tradition for hundreds of years.
