Parallels between Kafka's life and

“Parallels between Kafka’s life and ‘The Metamorphosis’”

Many authors reflect an aspect of their life in their novels, poems, or theatre. Such is the case of Franz Kafka who in many of his books, reflects his attitude towards life, his parents and frustrations. These three characteristics may be seen in what is considered to be his masterpiece; The Metamorphosis. This is a story of fantasy when one morning, Gregor Samsa “...found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.”. With this novel, we can perhaps understand better Kafka’s relationship with his parents, especially with his father and Kafka?s internal self.

Kafka has been described as “a small, anonymous individual trapped in a nightmare...” and ironically, these words well describe Gregor. When he is changed into a vermin, he thinks he is just having a terrible nightmare that will soon be over but actually it’s not. Kafka had contempt for himself because many characters of his books are pathetic and many of them have characteristics which describe Kafka himself, just as Gregor does. Even Gregor’s last name rhymes with his own; Samsa and Kafka. Kafka describes himself when he describes Gregor; a person who didn’t like his job and w

In many aspects, Kafka might be thought to have a limited life; he was a lonely, isolated and neurasthenic person and he lived with is parents most part of his life. Gregor is just the same as he is in his early 20s and he is still living with his parents and there is not much going on in his life. He does nothing except for work and he is too concerned about it: “...Before it strikes a quarter past seven, I must be completely out of bed without fail. Anyway, by that time someone from the firm will be here to find out where I am, since the office opens before seven.”. Even though Gregor was never late to work or had never been sick, he hated his job and just as Kafka, he was a frustrated person. An example of Kafka’s frustration may be that he became engaged twice and he broke these engagements with the same girl.

he was feeling this way, he never said anything and even made his parents believe that he enjoyed what he did. Kafka was the same but the difference is that he did speak up and told his father everything that was bothering him even though he did so many years later. He wrote a really long letter to his father which was later published as a book. This book talks about Kafka’s traumas when he was a child and how all of them -which were mainly caused by his father- were reflected in his adult life. After analyzing all of what Kafka says in that letter, we can see many similarities with his life and Gregor’s. Kafka describes himself the way we picture Gregor; weak, ugly and thin. As we see throughout ‘The Metamorphosis’, Gregor was always tryi
