Right from the beginning one can see the similarities between Nick and Fitzgerald’s early life. Both Nick and Fitzgerald come from the same time and place. They’re both from St. Paul, Minnesota and grew up in the Roaring Twenties. Nick is stated as being from “…well-to-do people…” (7) much like Fitzgerald’s middle-class family. His father also gave Fitzgerald an important piece of advice about not criticizing other. This was the same advice that Nick’s father gave to him.

Gatsby’s relationship to Fitzgerald is somewhat different. They’ve both worked hard to achieve success. They realize that image can say a lot about a man and can help you get ahead in life. Their life are also related by their failure at holding on to their true love. They both met women they fell in love with but because of their involvement in the war they were shipped out and lost their “true” love. They are both the “poor boy” who must somehow reach success to win back the girl of their dreams. In the end Fitzgerald fails to keep Zelda by his side. Many say this is portrayed to the reader by Gatsby’s death “Gatsby’s death is a feeling of spiritual failure of Fitzgerald’s” (Bewley 5).

As an adult parties intrigued Fitzgerald. He attended many parties that were elaborate, fancy and overdone. Theses parties were mirrored images of Gatsby’s parties. Fitzgerald’s real-life parties and the parties Gatsby hosted were mainly to impress Zelda and Daisy.

Tom Buchanan is not so much based on a certain person, but rather a group of people. Tom is a vivid representation of the brutality and moral carelessness of the rich. His character is based on the rich’s view of superiority over every one else and lack of respect for any one else’s emotions, but their own (Northman 15).

With out any doubt many can now see and agree that Nick and Gatsby are modeled after Fitzgerald. Nick and Fitzgerald are both respectful young men who know what they want out of life. They both showed respect for parents but dreamed of achieving more in life. They’re both small-town westerners trying to make it in a big Eastern city.

Shortly after falling in love Fitzgerald was being shipped out to war and left Zelda, like Gatsby did to Daisy. After the war Fitzgerald returned and got back with Zelda. At this time Fitzgerald was a poor writer trying to succeed, but Zelda wanted a successful man and would not wait for Fitzgerald to make it as a struggling writer. Fitzgerald was devastated her leaving “I’ve tried my best and failed…I have nothing else to live for” (Bloom 79). He was determined to get her back, like Gatsby wanted Daisy in his life again.
