Use of Nonverbal Communication
It has been noted that communication is far more than speech and writing. Most of us are unaware that we are communicating in many different ways even when we are not speaking. The same goes for many other social animal species. We rarely learn about this mostly nonverbal communication in school even though it is very important for effective interaction with others. Growing up in a society, we learn how to use gestures, glances, slight changes in tone of voice, and other auxiliary communication devices to alter or emphasize what we say and do. We learn these highly culture bound techniques over years largely by observing others and imitating them. We learn from birth that we get what we need out of our body gestures and non verbal communication as babies. We in turn learn to trust our environment and those around us. We are encouraged to continue in our actions and then go on to develop properly. On the other hand if our desires are not met directly after our gestures are made we may die. If our gestures and non-verbal communication brings unreliable results or if they bring only occasional relief and comfort we may become untrusting of our surroundings. Also if we get negative feedback one time from a specific-nonverbal a
I usually take into account the cultural background. Since we have so many different cultures I will make it a point to ask about a person’s particular culture. It will show care and concern of the person as well as their culture and history. I believe that the varied presentations gave me a better understanding and appreciation of the nonverbals that surround me every day. I also believe that I will be able to implement what I have learned on a daily basis at my work environment as well as my every day life and home environment. Each person not only had different material but also had a different way of showing what they had. Nonverbal messages are functional. They help to create impressions, manage interaction, express emotion, send relational messages, deceive and detect deception and send messages of power and persuasion. They are also influenced by context of culture, relational context and the situation. I think the hardest thing for me is helping someone be comfortable if they are uncomfortable with themselves. For example if a person does not like the way that they look I would naturally try to sensitively reassure them that they are ok or that they may be able to win the battle of bettering themselves, sensitive. nd then another time favorable results we may become frustrated and if done at an early age we could develop mental problems later in life.
