Like water for chocolate by laura Isquivel
Compare and contrast the two prime male figures in the novel, Pedro and John Brown, paying attention to their respective relationships with Tita.In the novel “Like water for chocolate” Pedro and Dr. John Brown are the two main important male characters in the novel. And with this they are actually very different except the fact that both of them are truly in love with Tita. Pedro is Tita’s true love, but due to the fact that Tita is the youngest in her family she has to stay home and take care of mama Elena, which does not permit her to marry Pedro. To be near Tita, Pedro marries her sister Rosaura, and he thinks that Tita and him can carry on their love. But all this was not so easy as due to Pedro’s marriage with her sister Tita is in shock and has a bad mental condition. This is when Dr John Brown comes into picture. He takes Tita to his house and takes care of her. This is when he falls in love with Tita. When Tita gets better he proposes to her, and she accepts at that point thinking that John could have been a new beginning to her life. This is when the jealousy rises between John and Pedro, and we see the many differences between these two characters. They are also very important as it a gives the reader a goo
To conclude it can be said that John is a mature character unlike Pedro and this can be seen when Pedro tries his best in stopping Tita from marrying John. But when John finds out that Tita still loves Pedro he is calm about it and is happy for Pedro, and is ready to congratulate him. The other difference between them is that Pedro’s love for Tita is based on lust, passion, eroticism, but as for John, his love is basically Tita’s eyes its friendship and in his eyes its love. In similarity both Pedro and John love Tita very much, and this whole love is in secrecy for the both of them. Also John is a very kind hearted person, who is worldly wise, and unlike Pedro John is happy in his life. Pedro is always worried about his relationship with Tita, and the tensions with his wife. Even though John is a minor character, he shows us how understanding a person can be, where else Pedro just wants his happiness, and Is selfish in some ways. Through these two characters it can be seen that the author is trying to put contrasting characters into the novel. She might be doing this to show how to different characters handle the same situation, and here it was Tita’s love. d knowledge of how certain characters can differ. On the other hand we have Dr. John Brown, who is an American doctor who cares for Tita when she experiences a breakdown.
