Cognitive Experiment report
In this ever changing world, people continue to listen to music. Music plays an important part in our lives and is very powerful in affecting anything from our mood, stress, motivation and even attention. This notion brings about the idea of how music can influences our performance in the workplace. In an article titled, The Effects of Music on the Mind, author of Kristian David Olsen shows that, "listening to music as background can help people when they're thinking, learning, or working" and goes on to explain a study conducted with different types of music and how it affected attention. Attention comes up as the first issue in the case about effect of external stimulus toward ability in complex task and performance. Reaction time is a commonly used method of studying attention; it is the period of delay between the subject being shown a stimulus and their response, the time taken is usually measurable in milliseconds. The studies have been undertaken to see the effect in reaction times cause by divided attention, music consumption or other tasks that require active information processing. This means that the more complex a simultaneous task is, the longer the reaction time of the subject will be.
After the flying simulation task done, all participants will be given a paper and a pen, and asked to write down as many words that appeared during the task as they could remember. This secondary test is a test for short-term memory without awareness. The combination of the primary task, fly simulator, and secondary task, short-term memory is designed to reduce the time and cost of the experiment and its result is sufficient and very beneficial.
