The Vietnam War, well known and brought up a lot in today’s world as a comparison to the current Iraq war. This war took place because the Vietnams couldn’t agree on one government so they broke up into two major parts, North and the South. North Vietnam wanted to have Communism for a government under the influence of Ho Chi Minh, and the South wanted to have democracy, under the influence of the French rule. Richard Nixon, the president of America at that time, quoted “We will fight any country that is fighting for Democracy.” But the real reason that they came in was because they were afraid that communism would get too powerful. They thought this because the Northern Vietnam was backed by China and Russia. Both these countries were powerful then and still now. Russia at that point had already expanded its empire into Eastern Europe, Korea and Cuba.

After all these hard work of the withdraw of the US soldiers, the northern Vietnamese ignored the cease-fire plan, and stormed into South Vietnam. By the following year, the whole of Vietnam had become one country, and under the communist rule. Out of the 2.8 million American troops, 58,000 lives were taken, and around 2 million Vietnamese were killed and far more disabled and badly wounded.
