“Are you ready for some football?” The infamous words come from the loudspeaker on this seemingly wrong Friday night. The star quarterback, whole defensive line and more are on the sidelines in khakis and letterman’s jackets while the junior varsity boys take over. Watching, or playing, LHS football your senior year is something many look forward to at Lawrence High School, but stupidity has ruined that for my class. Traditionally the whole team does something the semi-permanent to show their “team spirit”; like dying their hair the same color. Usually the boys are all up for this, but apparently not this year. There are always a few boys who choose not to participate, and good for them, but this year a complaint arose from a freshman boy about “hazing”. This is a very serious, very illegal
Hazing is usually brought up when talking about “freshman initiation” in sports. It can be fun of course, but people can get scared, offended, even hurt. At the ripe age of fourteen and fifteen, freshman boys tend to give in to peer pressure in order to “fit in” or be “cool”. Often these boys are told to do things such as get drunk until they vomit or play pranks on people; very often forced to do so. Some are pushed to the edge and even death has occurred in cases of “just having a little fun” or serious hazing. Luckily I have not had to witness such bad experiences, but I do know they happen. Seven starting seniors on the LHS football team 2002 were suspended for five games as a result of a hazing complaint. The team had decided to shave their heads; at least the upperclassmen did. This
