Masculine or Feminine Attributes: Help Determine Which Caree

The difference between masculine and feminine attributes regarding preference for math and english was investigated. The 24 participants (22 females and 2 males) were students taking a psychology course at a major university. The Implicit Association Test (Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz) was given to participants to see what their attitudes were in english and math. In this study we were expecting to see feminine attributes associating negatively toward math relative to english on implicit measures. The Bem Sex Role Inventory (Bem, 1981) was given to the participants to characterize their personalities as feminine or masculine. There were no significant correlations regarding masculine and feminine attributes with math and english.

Masculine or Feminine Attributes Decide Which Career is Chosen

It seems wherever you look there are questions of gender differences. Is there a difference? Are males naturally better at sports, math, and science? Why do females shy away from math and science? Females represent 34% of physical science majors, 35% of math/computer science majors, and 16% of engineering majors in a major university (Noesek, Banaji, & Greenwald, 2002). That percentage is

The present study found no significant relationship between masculine or feminine attributes and having a preference for math or english. There are possible reasons for finding no significant results. There were only two males present during the study so the BSRI was given to alleviate the lack of male participants by showing people with masculine or feminine attributes. The participants’ score on the BSRI was not significantly masculine or feminine in their attributes, therefore it was difficult to make any correlations regarding masculinity and math preference or femininity and english preference.

low in comparison with males. Females still occupy stereotypical roles (Noesek et al.). Amazingly, female scientists and engineers have increased 250% between 1972 and 1982 (Campbell and Evans, 1997) in science and math majors, but still the female percentage was not close in numbers with the males in the same major. Science is still a male dominated field and this could be a possible problem for our generation. The math oriented careers are typically higher paying and more prestigious. These higher paying jobs convey high status and good financial rewards (Campbell et. al.,). This appears to leave females at a disadvantage monetarily.

A Pearson correlation was used. Significance level was set at .05. There was no significant correlation found (figure 1) between math preference and masculinity score, r (23) = .188, p > .05. There were no significant correlation of english preference and masculinity score, r (23) = .116, p > .05; math preference and femininity score, r (23) = -.141, p > .05; or english preference and femininity score, r (23) = -.332. Math preference and english preference refers to how well you like math and english. The BSRI masculinity mean score was 93.08 with a standard deviation of 17.65; femininity mean score was 100.80 with a standard deviation of 11.70. Math preference mean score was 4.63 with a standard deviation of 2.10 and english preference mean score was 4.50 with a standard deviation of 1.84.
