French's Mission to Colonize the Africans

The French’s Christian Mission and Its Effects

The Europeans colonized and infiltrated African civilizations in order to make a profit and to be known as a superior nation. By doing this, European colonists “messed up” the traditional African lifestyle. The European mission to bring civilization to Africa was a greedy act of colonialism. The Europeans, hiding under the flag of Christianity humanitarianism and liberalism, occupied Africa and enforced hard labour to the men and women of Africa. The effects of Christianity in Africa can be seen today and were certainly seen in the time of colonization as well.

In Mongo Beti’s The Poor Christ of Bomba, the French took a decidedly different approach in governing their colonies. The French decided that the best way was the French way. Therefore they decided to immerse their colonies in the French culture, language, and way of life and store the concepts of “evolúe.” This meant that the people of their vast land holdings in Africa, particularly West Africa had to change all that they knew in an attempt to become more “French” or in other words “negritude.”

The French that had come to Africa had no appreciation for the mystical culture of the Africans.

I believe that the Christian church had an extremely negative effect on the overall maturing of African culture. Surely the Christian church was the most powerful and wealthy of all religions, however what made it think that they had the right to go against the most basic and true teachings of the church for money? In addition, religion was used to get into the very hearts and souls of the African people and open it up to the new ideas that were then being fed to them by the French and other European governments. But, I feel that a true Christian will find the word of God and flock to it for it is the way that needs to be followed for true salvation. Today, civil wars still rage on because for a long period in time Africa was not viewed as its own independent place but rather as a place to get good strong labour for little or no cost. Africa has a long way to come and recover and has a lot of scars to show for the way that the “French” way of Christianity corrupted their way of life.

Years of the African tribal system that relied on power being passed from generation to generation like a monarchy was destroyed. Families were split apart and men and boys were put to work or sent to missionary schools to be educated by the French. Father Drumont was seen as a benevolent person who has come with the message of Christ to save the “pagans”, but only the women (mostly from polygamy household) and the children are interested. However, the men aren’t as interest
