“Our Ford himself did a great deal to shift the emphasis from truth and beauty to comfort and happiness.” (Huxley, 228) It is my opinion that this quote plays a major role in the ideas behind Brave New World. In reading, one can see that key concepts in Brave New World revolve around society working together rather against each other, all the while being happy in their time. At the same time, individuals understand that they are important to the society and the classes they are placed into as a whole, not as an individual, being shown that even in death, they are contributing to societies wheels. However, when one stops to admire nature, or think for himself, the wheels of motion are slowed. The further they continue exploring truth and beauty, the greater chances they may begin to realize that they are treated as slaves. This is unwant
ed in Brave New World. Allowing free thought does not keep society together. “Universal happiness keeps the wheels steadily turning, truth and beauty cannot.” (Huxley, 228) The controller himself knows what the truth is, yet keeps it locked away to prevent the past from turning present. The idea that if one does not know of more happiness, they will remain content. Letting the truth/past of the world back into the Brave New World would only reinstate the past.
From my experiences, I would much rather be happy than uncomfortable. At the same time, I do not believe that I am equal to those around me. I know better than to agree with that. I have been conditioned to be my own person, regardless of what others think of me. I see the truth in the world and the beauty around me. I am capable of understanding truth and beauty-I see the t
