Cloning and the Recent Advances of Science

Cloning has been around for a few years and has achieved public recognition only very recently. Many people don’t know what cloning actually entails and what the possible side effects of a cloned animal or even human could be. Scientists have spent many hours trying to clone humans and many different farm animals which could be helpful in the way of food production. Cloning has many components that span a vast spectrum for producing another living being. Mainly, human and animal cloning are the two that are widely talked about. There are, however, many controversial topics associated with cloning and its effect on the human race. Because "cloning" is sometimes hard to identify, one can learn be applying their knowledge of it’s components and what has been achieved so far.

Cloning has been a controversial subject for some time and is only starting to be clearly defined by the masses. There are two distinct sides of cloning: animal and human. Animal cloning is defined in technical terms as "a means of asexual reproduction where a single cell in made to grow into an animal genetically identical to the animal that donated the cell" (Weiss, A-16) Human cloning is basically the same, yet there are more complications associa

The research that has gone on has had some exciting successes and some terrible let downs. In cloning "scientists harvest an unfertilized egg from a female donor, removing the genetic material and replacing it with new DNA from an adult cell of an animal [or human] to be cloned. An electric shock coaxes it into dividing" (Neegaard, A-8) and the egg can grow into a much younger identical twin of the donor. The first successful clone was Dolly the sheep. Though, it took 277 attempts before she was born and healthy. Scientists have also been able to create cats, cattle, pigs, goats, mice and other farm animals. This doesn’t go without saying that the clones had significant abnormalities and brain damage. Respirators and feeding machines had been hooked up to these animals, some right out of the womb. Just recently a colt was created from a mare donor. This was a great advance in the science. Humans, however, pose a great risk in cloning because of their molecular structure. In December a cult group was said to have cloned a human but these reports were never verified. Leading up to human cloning, animals have been the "test group" in the field of genetic engineering.
