Othello

In the play "Othello", Shakespeare clearly views the events of the play as tragic.
He appears to view the marriage between Desdemona and Othello as noble and heroic, .
for the most part. Throughout my paper I will be comparing and contrasting quotes from .
the play and the movie "Othello.".
             .
             .
During the late sixteenth century, while the wars between Venice and Turkey .
were still aroused; Othello would marry Desdemona with hopes of building a life .
together in spite of their age, race, and experience. But an eager man by the name of Iago .
tries to sabotage their happiness by convincing Othello that Desdemona was unfaithful.
             .
             .
My first of several comparisons deals with the play and the movie version of .
"Othello" both referring to him as "the moor" (I.i.57). From my point of view this is .
a type of racial slur to try and degrade Othello because they use that word to describe .
him. Other examples of slang they would use to describe Othello are: he, him, and a .
             Barbary horse. .
             .
             .
The second comparison deals with Cassio trying to convince to Iago that he .
cannot drink alcohol. "I have very poor and unhappy brains for drinking. I could well .
wish courtesy would invent some other kind of entertainment." (II.iii30-32) Iago knew .
that if he pushed the issue then Cassios" good manners would eventually override his .
determination and end up giving in. Compared to the movie this statement is the same .
             one used in the book.
             .
This comparison kind of jumped out at me. I remembered the quote from the book .
concerning the handkerchief and its whereabouts. Then I saw and heard her repeat the .
same sentence in the movie. Desdemona was confronted by Othello about how important .
that handkerchief was to him. She was panicked into lying by saying "It is not lost, but .
what if it were?" (IIIiiii82) .
I don't particularly like this scene but I remember it from both the book and the .
movie. Desdemona's cousin Lodovico, recently arrived from Venice with a letter for .
