According to the Factnet site, mind control involves "all coercive psychological systems, such as brainwashing, thought reform, and coercive persuasion."(What is Mind Control?, 1999) Mind control is simply the manipulation of a person’s thoughts to process and believe the way someone else wants it to process and believe. The sites mentions that mind control in most cases is not made apparent to the victim of the mind control. They are usually under the assumption that they are making their own decisions and have free will. The Factnet site

goes on to advice that the victim is usually practiced to obey through humiliation, repetition of tasks, and sleep deprivation.

When it comes to mind control a person may see many different techniques used. There are seven tactics involved in coercive mind control that the Factnet site discusses. The first is to make the individual more open to suggestion through hypnotic techniques and other techniques such as prolonged audio, visual, verbal, or tactile fixation drills, repetition of routine activities, and sleep and nutritional deprivation. The second is to control the person's social life, time and social support by excessive rewards and punishments. Usually the person is isolation from family and friends and people that do not support the group or leader. The group becomes the only source of economic and emotional support. The third tactic of coercive control is to prevent non-supporting information opinions in group. Rules are established about what are permissible topics to discuss with outsiders. Communication is often highly controlled and an exclusive language is usually constructed solely for the group. The forth tactic is to make the person look at their past actions and beliefs in a negative way. The persons core beliefs such as their basic consciousness, reality awareness, world view, emotional control and defense mechanisms are undermined. The person is persuaded to then accept the group’s mission and views. In the fifth tactic the group or leader makes the person feel powerless by putting the person through intense and frequent actions that cause the person to question their own ability to make good decisions. It is usually an attack on the person’s confidence in himself and his judgment. The sixth tactic is to cause the person to avoid emotional arousal by way of anxiety, guilt, intense humiliation, loss of privilege, and other techniques including manipulation, social isolation, and social status changes. This would harden the person and make mind control correction increasingly difficult. The seventh and final tactic is intimidation. Psychological threats are used. The person is advised that if they do not follow the group that they may face natural physical, mental, and emotional consequences. Being in the group or following the leader is the only way to avoid disease, mental illness, or lonely. There may be several other tactics but the seven mentioned are the most prevalent and successful.
