Gettier's moral on the 'Justified True Belief System '
Gettier’s challenges link up to what can be defined as knowledge. He looks at different scenarios so to causally come to a conclusion as to what can be justified and what cannot. This is important as without a set of infallible proofs we cannot deduce anything. It is especially the case in logic as well as in mathematics as these principles are very definitive and has to be linked to the argument if we are to have a broad but conceptually valid answer. On this topic it is easy to get sidetracked onto issues which have to do with the topic but at the end leave the reader more aware of the situations that arise than an argument for or against the topic. I find that Gettier has taken on a clever task in inspiring other similar analyses as his relates to important situations in law, philosophy and in general validity. These will continue to serve in making sense of the world as will be displayed. Firstly, however we have to define knowledge. Then we have to lay Gettier’s investigation (it is important not to have a too open mind as this will lead to inaccuracies and highly improbable scenarios). I will then try and analyse where his type of study has influenced in my opinion various aspects of intellect.
Knowledge for me means that I know certain facts and they may be right or wrong because to my ‘knowledge’ I know them as that. It makes no difference if those statements are true or false but the counter theory could be that. For example: you know humans are mortal –does it mean that if humans are immortal you don’t know they are mortal? Yes, it does, but it then means you always believed they were mortal. In this way my ‘knowledge’ is false and knowledge is proved therefore separate from belief. Gettier-inspired challenges redefine the concept of knowledge for these purposes so that we can know what context to put things in. As one can see there has to be some form of symmetry on which to make other distinctions, enhance our understanding of factual knowledge (Conee 1988:264) and philosophy. When the person concludes by lucky guesses the actual numbers we have to ascertain that he possessed the knowledge because it became fact after his attempts. Ayer and Gettier both seek to create levels of marking in that as long as we agree on the marking there makes no difficulty in choosing the levels of distinction.
