Same Sex Marriages

The English common law states that a marriage is a contract between a man and a woman to become husband and wife. Furthermore, the bible states that a marriage is between a man and a woman who love each other coming together to become one flesh. Marriage is a traditional institution that has existed in society for thousands of years. Recently there has been a movement to redefine this institution to include same sex marriage. The common law definition of marriage should not be changed to include same sex marriage, for these relationships do not provide the most suitable environment for raising a family, compromises Christian religious beliefs, and negatively impacts societies values and beliefs for future generations.

Same sex marriages are not the most suitable environment for raising children. Children thrive when they have a mother and father living together as one family unit. Peggy Drexler, a psychologist from San Francisco, found that that the sons of lesbian couples are more “willing to consider a wider range of sexual orientation for themselves at younger ages, and think in more creative and inventive ways of structuring a family”.

(Pohlig) A family environment consisting of a child, his or her mother and father prov

Contrary to previous conclusions, children of lesbian and gay parents do indeed have distinguishable differences from their counterparts who have straight parents. Their interpretation of the data concludes that children of lesbian and gay parents are less likely to conform to traditional ideas of gender roles, gender-based career choices, and compulsory heterosexuality (Garner)

Since biologically no two men no two women can reproduce on their own, homosexual couples would have to use many artificial reproduction methods to have a child. This is not the natural way of conception which God wanted couples to produce by. Legalizing same sex marriage does not only go against procreation, but the change in the definition of a marriage gives lesser meaning to the union. Archbishop Prendergast says, "The redefinition transforms the civil institutions of marriage into a registered domestic partnership system and eliminates the distinctive characteristics of marriage."(Gatehouse) This change will affect all those who are married and living in the family unit that God wanted them to. Heterosexual marriages are shown as a sacred union between a man and a woman, but the legalization of homosexual marriages will give lesser value to the institution between a man and woman since same sex marriage would now be looked upon as normal. Marriage was created for man and woman only and being homosexual goes against the religious teachings of the Catholic Church. Taken from the Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

The common law definition of marriage should not be changed to include same sex marriage. In creating a new definition of marriage, an institution that has been deeply rooted in our society is being destroyed. Same sex marriage allows for children to be exposed to homosexual parenting, creating the likelihood that these children will go against traditional ideas of male and female roles. Homosexual unions should not be legalized since these unions lack the ability to procreate, which compromises the teachings of the Catholic Church. These teachings and many of societies traditions, values and beliefs will be negatively impacted in order that homosexuals can be allowed to feel accepted in society.
