Jeffrey Dahmer, Cannibal
The article “Jeffrey Dahmer, Cannibal”, written by Angie Cannon, portrays one man’s life. He is infamous for the numerous murders he committed, predominantly the ways in which he perpetrated them. He is notorious for the monstrous ways he slaughtered his victims. He saved the skulls and other various body parts of the victims in his fridge and a freezer. He would drill holes into his victims’ heads and later had sex with the decomposing bodies. In writing “Jeffrey Dahmer, Cannibal”, Cannon intended to prove the decadent behavior of Dahmer. The point Cannon tries to make evident in the article states the following: “Over 13 years, mostly through the excessive 1980s, Jeffrey Dahmer, alone in his poisoned world, was monstrous, repulsive, depraved.” Cannon begins her opening paragraph by revealing a brief history of Jeffrey Dahmer. She generally focused on Dahmer’s way of life and the way he treated his victims before and after their deaths. Cannon states: “In his putrid, one-bedroom apartment in Milwaukee, he saved painted skulls and severed heads, including one stashed in the fridge next to a box of baking soda. He had a kettle and a freezer of body parts. He
Cannon then goes on to specifically describe the details of Dahmer’s actions. Cannon conveys Dahmer’s background with the use of a specific date and the name of his first victim, the age of Dahmer at the time of his first homicide, the method of homicide, and a total number of victims Dahmer killed. “His killing spree started in 1978 with an 18-year-old hitchhiker whom Dahmer met and brought home for a few beers. Dahmer, who had just graduated from high school, battered him with a barbell, cut up the body, and scattered the crushed bones behind his parents’ house.” Further on in this paragraph, Cannon explains his career as a killer, revealing the moment which led up to his arrest. “By the time he was arrested on July 22, 1991, after a man he had handcuffed escaped from his apartment and flagged down a police car, Dahmer had killed 17 men and boys. He confessed, saying simply, ‘I carried it too far, that’s for sure.’” As Cannon writes about Dahmer she proves, by the use of a statement made by Dahmer himself, that he was, in fact, well aware of what he was doing.
