Problem - Based Learning (PBL) is a curriculum development and an instructional strategy designed to challenge students. (Finkle & Torp, 1995; Novak 1996). PBL has recognized the need to develop problem solving skills as well as the necessity of helping students to acquire necessary knowledge and skills. PBL challenges students to take charge of their education (White, 1996) and encourages students to ‘learn to learn’ (Duch 1996). It is an effective method of learning where students work in small groups under the instruction of a facilitator or mentor working to solve ‘real world’ problems. (Duch 1995), and in the process develop skills of negotiation, communication and collaboration (Aldred, Aldred, Walsh and Dick, 1997).The first application of PBL was in medical schools at McMasters University in Canada. It was designed by Howard Barrows and was introduced as early as 1969 in the faculty of health and science. It was originally developed in order to improve quality of medical education. Ongoing meetings with my school based mentor teacher have ensured my progress of meaning making is on track, and have helped clear any concerns that I’ve had. Another example of collaborative learning, also known as ‘doing things together’ was during the first few weeks of session. We were placed into groups and were to become anthropologists. We were placed in an area, which was the Unibar, and our task was to research and observe everything that was happening in that area and why. We were to ask people in this area why they were there, what they like about the area etc. In compiling our research, we collaborated and put together the most common findings to present back to our homeroom. The collaborative learning experience assists in making it a lot easier for me to share my knowledge with other people and I do not feel as apprehensive as I usually would. I feel we are able to gather and construct information and focus on losing the competitiveness of high school where I am used to working alone and competing against other people. These stages do not often run in this sequential order, but rather they can integrate and overlap many times.
